Lib Dem leader Ed Davey calls on the Prime Minister to back a joint plan to recognise Palestine and end the appalling Israeli blockade which has blocked food, water and medicine from entering Gaza.

Calum Miller MP (Lib Dem Foreign Affairs Spokesperson) wrote to the Foreign Secretary urging the UK to take stronger action as the Israeli Government continues the blockade of Gaza and its military assault - including a total arms export ban, the recognition of Palestine and sanctions on extremist Israeli ministers Ben-Gvir and Smotrich.

Key points from Callum Miller's detailed letter to the Labour Foreign Secretary, David Lammy MP, included:

"The Liberal Democrats have proposed a series of policies aimed at building a path to a sustainable peace  in the region. These have never been more needed. So I urge you now to implement the following proposals:

• Ban the export of all UK arms to Israel, ensuring that no UK weapons can be used in the perpetration of human rights abuses in Gaza.
• Immediate recognition of the state of Palestine - ideally in concert with other allies like France - to show our support for Palestinian self-determination and a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders.

• Sanction the extremist Minister Ben-Givr and Smotrich, who actively promote expansion into the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OTPs).……

   

  Given the urgency with which action is required, I would welcome your response on the following questions:

• How is the Government working with international partners to pressure the Israeli Government to allow aid to reach Gaza?
• Are contingency measures being considered to ensure aid reaches those suffering in Gaza, even if the Israeli Government continues to block the direct supply of aid into the strip?"

Liberal Democrats at all levels of the party are determined to keep pressing the Labour Government to take stronger action to support the Palestinians.
