Lib Dems say "Andy Burnham needs to fix the crisis in social care, stop the sewage crisis & fix the great damage Brexit is doing to the UK economy by mending the UK's broken relationship with Europe

Ed Davey says Andy Burnham's first speech as PM disappointing.

As Andy Burnham became Prime Minister, Lib Dem Leader, Sir Ed Davey, said: "Our message to Andy Burnham today is simple: you have the power to change the country - use it!

Time and time again, the British people have been promised change, only to be let down. From the Conservatives’ and Nigel Farage’s disastrous Brexit deal to Keir Starmer’s miserable premiership, nothing ever seems to get any better.

Labour has the majority to deliver the change they promised and Liberal Democrats stand ready to work across party lines with this government to create the rapid change Britain is crying out for.

We need real action to fix the crisis in social care. This year has seen a record number of people stuck in hospital because they can’t access care in the community, increasing pressure on our already overstretched NHS. A system where elderly people are left bedbound without support, and where families lose everything on care home fees must end."

Ed Davey continued by saying The Government: "must stop the sewage crisis by replacing the failed privatisation water model with public-benefit mutuals; owned by the people rather than the state, and run for public health and the environment, not private profit.

..and fix our broken relationship with Europe, to grow our economy and cut the cost-of-living; with a new Growth and Defence Partnership with the EU, including membership of the Single Market and a Customs Union."

And must address the deeper roots behind why issues such as these haven’t been addressed before.

Instead of a voting system which awards large majorities on tiny shares of the vote, allowing parties to ignore the majority of voters, we need to give everyone an equal vote and voice in our democracy through proportional representation.

Ed Davey finished by saying: "Andy Burnham has a very short window to turn this government around, end the chaos and build trust with communities across the country.

But outside Number 10 today, he didn’t mention any of these crucial issues.

If he is serious about addressing them, about fixing our broken politics, we’ll work with him to deliver the change we desperately need."
