“We’ve hit our target for the Eltham Avenue fence petition thanks to a wonderful response from the residents of Cippenham and Slough” said a delighted Jen Simpson, local resident and petition organiser.

Jen Simpson continued: “on the 8th of September 2025, the last day of the petition, I submitted 584 signatures on the written petition to join the 1,128 on the electronic version. This has been a joint effort by FC Cippenham, EL Fitness, and many local residents backed by our local councillor, Frank O’Kelly. Getting over 1,500 signatures means there will have to be a proper debate in full Council on this. I will be able to ask the Council to consult properly and re-think their plans, and I know councillors will support me.”

“So many local residents signed the petition because they are angry for many reasons about Slough Council putting a very high, spiked, metal fence around the car park at Eltham Avenue Recreation Ground, Cippenham. It is completely out of place in this green area and it blocks the previous easy pedestrian access to the hard surface, and through the car park to the outdoor gym. This was particularly valuable for those with mobility issues, who, nevertheless wished to use the gym.

The fence also creates a dangerous blind spot on a bend in the road just at the point where children will come out of the pavilion. This is just one of the safety concerns that could have a significant impact on FC Cippenham being able to continue to provide grass roots football training. Reducing the capacity of the car park that will be available on match days means more street parking.”

The Lib Dem Cllr for the Cippenham Village ward, Frank O’Kelly, said, “This fence comes just after a Council meeting accepted my amended motion to improve access to Slough’s green spaces, including for disabled people. The actions of Slough Council are going against what councillors just voted for. The Council failed to consult local people.”
